要点总结
- Commas, semicolons, and colons are the three punctuation marks that cause the most errors in academic manuscripts. Knowing when to use each prevents run-on sentences and misplaced pauses.
- Semicolons join two closely related independent clauses. If the clauses are not related, use a period instead.
- Colons introduce lists, explanations, or elaborations. The text before a colon must be a complete sentence.
- Quotation marks in academic writing are primarily used for direct quotes and technical terms on first use, not for emphasis.
- Punctuation rules vary between style guides (APA, Chicago, AMA). Always check your target journal’s conventions. PM Proofreading’s editing service ensures consistent punctuation throughout your manuscript.
Punctuation errors rarely make a manuscript incomprehensible, but they do make it harder to read. A misplaced comma changes the rhythm of a sentence. A missing semicolon creates a run-on. Incorrect use of colons, parentheses, or quotation marks signals to reviewers that the manuscript has not been carefully edited.
For non-native English speakers, punctuation is especially tricky because the rules differ between languages. German uses commas before every subordinate clause. Chinese uses different quotation mark styles. Arabic, Hebrew, and other right-to-left languages have entirely different punctuation conventions. If you translate your punctuation habits directly from your first language, errors will follow.
This guide covers the punctuation marks used in academic English, with a focus on the ones that cause the most problems in research manuscripts.
句号(.)
The period ends a declarative sentence. It is the most basic punctuation mark, and errors are rare. However, non-native speakers sometimes place periods incorrectly after abbreviations. In modern academic English, abbreviations like “et al.” use a period, but abbreviated units (kg, mL, cm) do not. Check your style guide for specific cases.
Use a single space after a period, not two. The two-space convention is a holdover from typewriter-era formatting and is no longer standard in any major style guide.
逗号(,)
The comma is the most frequently misused punctuation mark in academic writing. Its primary function is to separate elements within a sentence and to indicate a natural pause.
After introductory elements. “数据收集完成后,我们开始了分析。” “然而,结果尚无定论。” 引导性词语、短语或从句后务必加逗号。
在复合句中。 当两个独立分句由并列连词(and, but, or, so, yet)连接时,在连词前加逗号。
“The results were significance, further research is needed”就是逗号连接错误。
The Colon (:)
冒号用于引出内容:列表、解释、阐述或引用。冒号前的文本必须是一个完整的句子。“这项研究有三个目标:识别、测量和评估。” 而不是:“这三个目标是:识别……”(因为“这三个目标是”本身并不是一个完整的句子,后面还需要补充其他内容)。
在学术写作中,冒号最常用于引出列表、引出大段引用以及连接标题和副标题。“非正式住区的气候适应:以马尼拉为例。”
Parentheses ( )
括号内包含对句子有用但并非必不可少的补充信息。在学术写作中,括号最常见的用途是用于文中引用(Smith,2021)、首次使用缩写时使用缩写(“世界卫生组织(WHO)”)以及进行简短的说明(“第二阶段(数据分析)耗时三个月”)。
避免过度使用括号。如果括号内的信息确实重要,请考虑是否应该将其融入句子中。过多的括号会使句子显得生硬,难以理解。
Quotation Marks (” “)
The Apostrophe (‘)
The Slash (/)

What is the difference between a comma and a semicolon?
逗号用于分隔句子中的各个成分:例如列表中的项目、引导短语或由连词连接的从句。分号用于连接两个紧密相关的独立从句,且这两个从句之间没有连词。如果用句号代替分号后,两个句子仍然通顺,则使用分号是正确的。如果其中一侧不是一个完整的句子,则应使用逗号或冒号代替。
Should I use the Oxford comma in academic writing?
是的,大多数情况下都需要。APA、芝加哥格式以及大多数学术写作指南都要求使用牛津逗号(在列举三个或三个以上项目时,“and”前面要加逗号)。它可以避免歧义。“The study examine age, gender, and income”比“age, gender and income”更清晰,后者可能会被误解为将“gender and income”视为一个单独的项目。
When should I use quotation marks in academic writing?
直接引用来源(并注明出处)、首次使用专业术语或自创短语,以及某些引用格式中的文章或章节标题,都应使用引号。请勿使用引号强调,而应使用斜体。用引号强调某个词可能会给人以怀疑或讽刺的意味,这通常并非作者的本意。
Is it acceptable to use contractions in academic writing?
不,正式的学术写作中通常避免使用缩写(don't、can't、it's、won't)。请使用全称:do not、cannot、it is、will not。一些写作指南和期刊在这方面的要求有所放宽,但对于期刊投稿和学位论文来说,最稳妥的做法是完全避免使用缩写。
